Winter in Szklarska Poręba — what is open and what is closed?

This is not a day plan — our ready-made winter itinerary is in the separate guide Szklarska Poręba in winter. Here we answer the single question we hear most in December and January: what is actually open? We run the Toy Exhibition in the centre, so we know how trips planned from summer opening hours end. Checked in September 2026 — check the hours again before the winter holidays and public holidays.

What is open indoors in winter?

In the mountains the Hala Szrenicka PTTK hut is open 24 hours all year: reception 8:00–21:00, buffet for all hikers until 20:00.

When do the national park ticket offices open in winter?

This is the most common reason a winter outing fails: the offices work shorter hours than in summer, and the day is short.

When an office is closed, buy your ticket online — the park gives the purchase address on its website. Remember too that you may walk in the park from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, and in December and January that is a very narrow window.

Which trails get closed in winter?

Karkonosze National Park decides on closures as conditions and snow cover change. The only reliable source on the day you set off is the park’s tourist notice at kpn.gov.pl/komunikat-turystyczny — it has a separate section listing currently closed trails.

The list below comes from a 2023 overview on przewodnikwsudety.pl, that is from a secondary source — treat it as a hint about which sections tend to be closed, not as today’s status:

• the yellow trail from the Pod Łabskim Szczytem hut to Śnieżne Kotły,
• the green trail along the floor of Śnieżne Kotły to Rozdroże pod Wielkim Szyszakiem (avalanche risk),
• the red trail from Śnieżne Kotły to Przełęcz pod Śmielcem,
• the green trail from the upper Szrenica lift station above Kocioł Szrenicki to the red trail at Mokra Przełęcz.

From 15 March bird protection begins. In 2026, from 15 March until at least the end of May, the green trail Mokre Rozdroże – Śnieżne Kotły – Rozdroże pod Wielkim Szyszakiem and the yellow trail Mokre Rozdroże – Śnieżne Kotły were closed to protect black grouse and peregrine falcons. The end of winter does not mean everything is open again.

What is closed regardless of the weather?

• The red and black trail section from the car park to Rozdroże pod Kamieńczykiem — closed since 16 June 2026 until further notice (town notice of 11 June 2026; detours shown only on a map). The detour adds distance, and in winter the ticket office closes at 15:00 on weekdays, so factor that into your start time.
• The park’s Centre for Ecological Education at ul. Okrzei 28 — the park states that the building is completely withdrawn from use because of thermal renovation works planned to last until the end of 2027. It is open neither to visitors nor to groups — do not plan a visit. Sessions for organised groups are held temporarily in Jelenia Góra at ul. Chałubińskiego 23.
• The holiday bus line 116 to Karpacz — it ran for the last time on 31 August 2026 and has not operated since 1 September 2026.
• The road from Jakuszyce to the Orle Tourist Station — when there is snow you cannot drive it. The hostel then offers paid transport. The full Izera day is described in our guide Izera Mountains from Jakuszyce.

What we do not know about winter — and who to ask

We would rather say plainly that something is unconfirmed than copy hours that may have changed.

• The Szrenica cable car: the summer price list runs until 25 October 2026, and in winter Szrenica Ski Arena operates as a ski resort. We publish no winter hours or rules for walkers — check with the operator at szrenicaskiarena.pl.
• Esplanada park and Dinopark: the hours we publish are from September 2026. We have no winter hours for either, and Esplanada itself points to its Google profile for current times. The Alpine Coaster runs all year and the track is lit.
• Snow clearing on paths — sources do not say whether the approaches to Szklarka Waterfall, Mumlava Waterfall or the Złoty Widok terrace are cleared in winter. Assume they are not, and wear shoes with a good grip.
• Chatka Górzystów and the buffet at Orle — we found no official winter hours. Snow on Hala Izerska can lie until May, so call before you set off.

Where to check winter changes before you go

• kpn.gov.pl/komunikat-turystyczny — the park’s daily notice: trail conditions, the list of closed sections and the Karkonosze webcams.
• The “Uwaga, ważne!” section of the town’s tourist service — transport changes and temporary trail closures land there, including those announced by the forest district.
• The town’s weather and webcam pages — the town publishes readings from six points, including the lower and upper Szrenica lift stations and Jakuszyce, plus the current mountain rescue notice.
• Mountain rescue (GOPR): 985 or 601 100 300, plus the RATUNEK app. The Karkonosze group also covers the Izera Mountains.
• The Tourist Information Centre at ul. Jedności Narodowej 1A — for 31 August to 23 December 2026 the town gives Mon–Fri 8:00–16:00 and Sat 9:00–17:00, closed on Sundays. Confirm the hours for the winter season itself by phone.
• Trains — from 31 August to 24 October 2026 replacement buses run between Jelenia Góra and Szklarska Poręba Górna (town notice of 31 August 2026; an older one said 30 September). Confirm the timetable with Koleje Dolnośląskie before a winter trip.

How to build a winter day around these hours

The rule is simple: whatever closes earliest goes in the morning, whatever is indoors goes in the afternoon. The Kamieńczyk office stops work at 15:00 on weekdays and the “Szklarka” office at 16:00, so plan park walks before noon. Museums and glassworks close between 15:00 and 18:00, while Termy Cieplickie and Querion stay open longest — until 22:00 and 20:00.

Mind the day of the week: the JUNA Earth Museum and the Hauptmann House are closed on Mondays, and Leśna Huta publishes hours only from Tuesday to Saturday. Open daily are the Toy Exhibition, Termy Cieplickie and Querion. During the winter school holidays our exhibition at ul. Jedności Narodowej 16 stays open until 20:00, which works well at the end of a day.
