Brick Museum in Karpacz — a day trip from Szklarska Poręba
The drive from Szklarska Poręba to the Brick Museum in Karpacz takes about 40 minutes (about 28 km); without a car, take seasonal bus line 106 or line 116. The museum at ul. Mickiewicza 11 (entrance from ul. Konstytucji 3 Maja) opens daily 10:00–18:00, except 1 November.
We, Bartek and Magda, run the Toy Exhibition in Szklarska Poręba and the Brick Museum in Karpacz, which we opened on 6 January 2015 as Poland’s first permanent museum of brick layouts. Guests in Szklarska often ask whether it is worth crossing to the other side of the Karkonosze. Here is our honest answer.
Why drive from Szklarska to Karpacz?
Because there is nothing like it in Szklarska. Three floors of layouts have buttons and joysticks, so you choose the moment the SpaceX rocket launches into space, the trains start, the LEGO Technic machines get to work and the firefighters put out a fire. No photo does the details justice; you need to see them up close.
After a day on the trails, the mountain village with its chairlift feels especially familiar — the Karkonosze in brick form. There is also Star Wars, the world of Harry Potter with a large Hogwarts Express, an amusement park and a new version of the pirate ship with a 3D-printed mechanism.
How to get there from Szklarska Poręba
- By car: about 40 minutes, about 28 km from central Szklarska. The museum has no car park of its own — the nearest are the municipal car parks on ul. Konstytucji 3 Maja (where to park).
- By bus: seasonal line 106 via Podgórzyn and line 116 from Szklarska Poręba Górna. Timetables and details: getting there from Szklarska.
How to combine it with the Toy Exhibition
The easiest way is to start with us in Szklarska. At the Toy Exhibition (ul. Jedności Narodowej 16) you usually spend 30–40 minutes, and you can buy a Brick Museum ticket there at a very attractive price. Then drive to Karpacz for 40–60 minutes among the layouts. If you still have energy, go one floor up to the Video Game Museum.
In the summer and winter school holidays the Toy Exhibition stays open until 20:00, so you can also reverse the order: Karpacz in the morning, an evening stroll and toys in Szklarska.
When does this trip work best?
- On a rainy day — the whole museum is indoors. Indoor attractions fill up quickly in bad weather, so leave Szklarska early enough to be in Karpacz around 10:00.
- After a mountain hike — when legs have had enough but the children have not.
- On your last day — Karpacz is closer to Jelenia Góra, so the museum fits easily into the journey home.
What children and adults get out of it
Children press the buttons, hunt for hidden figures in challenges spread across the layouts and build in a zone separated from one of the layouts only by glass. Adults spot the jokes hidden in the details. Magda always tells guests to look up: Mars with a LEGO Technic rover hangs from the ceiling, and many visitors miss it entirely. Bartek’s favourite spot is the 1980s and 1990s zone.
