Szklarska Poręba or Karpacz — which should I choose?

It depends on your plans. Szklarska Poręba is a good base for Kamieńczyk and Szklarka waterfalls, Mount Szrenica and the Jizera Mountains, and in winter for cross-country skiing in Jakuszyce. Karpacz is closer to Śnieżka and the Wang Temple. The two towns are about a 30-minute drive apart, and we run places in both: the Toy Exhibition in Szklarska and the Brick Museum in Karpacz.
